INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT VILLA “NONNA”
Villa Nonna dates from the 17th century, and it was completely reconstructed in 2003.
Villa Nonna is a stone house in the historical centre of Komiža, it was built with the stone of the best quality from the island of Brac. Villa is situated in the longest kala (old Mediteranean street) of Komiža – Ribarska ulica (Fishermens street), which extends from central square to hotel’s beach. Villa Nonna is located only 10 meters from the sea, and 3 minutes by walking from the beach of Hotel Biševo.
Some twenty years ago, the Tavern ‘Nona’, used to be at the spot where the ground floor of Villa Nonna is today and it was one of the first such taverns in Komiža, an open type with a grill upon which guests could cook their own fish. For the people of Komiža, this tavern was a synonym for this house, and hence its current name “VILLA NONNA”.
The reconstruction of Villa Nonna included everything except the stone walls, which were returned to their former glory. All of the floors underwent complete adaptations, as the house is now an apartment complex with seven studio apartments. The use of traditional materials – wood, stone and wrought iron – has returned a feeling of authenticity to the house.
Though Villa Nonna gives the spirit of times past, it is modernly equipped. All apartments are air-conditioned, equipped with a safe and electronic door locks, high quality mattresses and satellite television. The bathrooms are modernly equipped and include a hair dryer. The house also has its own water reservoir and a solar system for water heating .Villa Nonna is capable to heat water to satisfy all the capacity of Villa Nonna for the whole day.
Each apartment of Villa Nonna is named after one Dalmatian plant. Apartment Salvia (Kade) is situated in the ground floor, there is a small yard of 10 m2 and it’s equiped by wooden table and chairs. Komiza is placed on the island Vis, one of the islands of Middle Dalmatia which is connected with daily boat-lines Split-Vis. The town is placed in a bay on the western part of island Vis, under the hill Hum (600m). Komiza attracts tourists with beautiful beaches. Along the eastern part of the bay, there are a lot of beaches which has small stones: Gusarica, Nova posta, Velo zalo and others. There are also a few sandy beaches there. Fruitful land in the inner part of island is giving inhabitants opportunity to grow grapes and fruit. On island Vis you can find a cardob ( rogac in Croatian language) which is a famous delicacy. Thanks to the fact that Vis is so far from the main land, sea around Vis is rich with fish and shells. It’s impossible to imagine traditional food without fruits from the sea. If you like sport and active holidays you can choose bowling, basketball, handball, volleyball and football. There are also many sea sports such as diving, sailing and surfing. If you are interested in having fun and cultural happenings, you can find lots of happening during the summer. Island of secrets
THE ISLAND OF VIS is one of the largest and furthest islands in the group of central Dalmatian islands. It is situated 45 km from land and is separated from the island of Hvar by the 18 km wide Vis Channel. Vis is connected to Split and Hvar (year round) via regular ferry lines, and in the summer season, also to Ancona on the Italian coast.
CLIMATE The island has dry and hot summers and mild and wet winters. The island belongs to the Adriatic type of the Mediterranean climate. The average summer temperature is one to two degrees lower than on the mainland, and two to three degrees higher in winter. The medium annual temperature is above 18oC. The medium sea temperature is around 17oC.
POPULATION The largest settlements on the island are Vis on the eastern coast and Komiza on the western coast of the island.
WINE-GROWING The sandy island soil best suits the development of wine-growing, making the Vis wines among the best in Dalmatia. The queen of wines - Vugava was born as the result of grape loving attitude. It is made from the grape sort of the same name, which grows exclusively in localities of the Vis wine region. It is produced as the famed dry wine and stands out due to its natural golden colour. It has a specific aroma which is subtle, deep and full. It is easily recognizable by its luxuriously full honey flavour. Plavac is by far the best known wine sort, a high quality sort of grape and wine. The best quality Plavac comes from the sandy fields of Bisevo.
FISHING The second largest economic branch on the island is fishing, due to the exceptionally rich sea fauna around the island. Historically speaking, the Komisa fisherman have dominated the Adriatic archipelago for centuries, and the result was the construction of the best fishing ship – the falkusa – dated from 17th century. This ship was in the service right up until the 1950s, and the last falkuša was traditionally burned in Komiza in 1989, in honour of the patron saint of sailors, St. Mikula. Construction of the island’s oldest fish processing factory began in Komiza in 1890. Though it can be said that fishing has played a key role in the survival of the local population in the past as well as the present, in the past ten years only 9 professional fishermen have been registered in Vis, and about 50 in Komiza.
TOURISM The island turned towards tourism thanks to its exceptional natural predisposition when it came out of isolation since the early 1990s. With the highest number of sunny days of all the Croatian islands, its beautiful beaches, the unique Blue Cave on the neighbouring island of Biševo and the sea that is pleasantly warm for swimming up till the end of September, increasing numbers of tourists are attracted to Vis each year.
