Croatian archipelago Croatian archipelago More and more guests choose to sail in the fantastic Croatian archipelago. Sailing in Croatia has become very popular and the key to the success is the convenience with the arrangement. The flight takes you direct to the Split airport and after a short transfer you arrive at the port, where an almost new, well equipped boat waits for you. After a review it is ready for sailing. The Croatian archipelago, one of the most beautiful destinations in the world. In the well known American tourist magazine “Travel + Leisure” the readers have chosen Croatia and its Dalmatian archipelago as one of the most beautiful travel destinations in the world. The readers have given Croatia second place in the Mediterranean area and seventh place in the entire world. Dalmatian islands competed against destinations like Bali, Phuket in Thailand, Hawaii, Maui and several more. The magazine sells approximately 2,5 million copies. Excellent conditions for sailing Croatia has a fantastic archipelago with approximately 1185 islands, of which 70 are inhabited. Here you can find crystal clear water, well preserved medieval towns and ravishing beautiful countryside. The wind force is normally around 4-5m/sec in the morning and increases to approximately 8-9m/sec and then subsides in the afternoon. Here are dizzyingly high mountains, turquoise blue water and green forest of stone-pine trees. Croatia has one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world, with many both small and big islands. Good food and exciting history Croatia is very rich in culture. Both Romans and Greeks have left a lot of traces in the history, and Italian influences are visible both in the architecture and the cuisine. The Croatian cuisine is very varied, and the wine is maybe not so well known, but really tasteful and worth its price. All opportunities of a comfortable sailing holiday Croatia has a lot of modern marinas with all the service you need and many nice bays to anchor in. The season is from April to the end of October. Croatia has a great infrastructure when it comes to harbours with choices. If you choose to lie in a marina it costs about 20-45Euro a day, at a buoy about 10Euro a day and to anchor is free. Why not a holiday both at sea and on the continent? You have the possibility to combine your sailing holiday with a week with a motorhome. SAILING AREAS North Dalmatia and National Park Kornati Our main port MarinaKremik is right in the heart of the Croatian coast with a comfortable distance to all the best ports. Five nautical miles northwest of the port starts Sibenik fantastic archipelago with the National Park Kornati in direct connection. In this area Krka river also flows into the sea, leading to charming Skradin and the National Park Krka. The national park has a boat to take you to waterfalls and nature reserve. The largest of the eight sick waterfalls lies a few kilometers above the Skradin. In 1985 became the river and its surroundings was classified as a national park because of its cultural treasures and its beauty value. Ultimately in this area is Dugi Otok, a long narrow island where the outside have no housing or suitable for the anchor, however, on the inside. Within Dugi Otok lies the island of Iz, with olive groves and fig-tree. Closest to the mainland is Ugljan and Pasman. Further south, Murter where there are three marinas on the island. South of Murter is a number of islands where you can find good anchorage bays and harbors. The beautiful National Park Kornati became a national park in 1980 and is a paradise for sailors. The entire island group is about 35 km long and about 15 km wide and consists of about 150 islands and islets. Most islands in the Kornati p Middle Dalmatia Outside of Split lies the island of Solta. Both in the northeast - and the west side are both good anchorage bays and the village harbor. Southeast of Solta is Brac. A woody island, with about 12 000 inhabitants. Many good harbors and bays to anchor up in. On the east coast is a lovely cove, Uvala Rasotica. On the West Coast is a marina in the Milne and on the south coast are also several good ports. Further south is the island of Hvar. A giant cozy small town with a large delightful squares and lots of bars, shops and restaurants around the harbor and square. Calm beautiful bays you find Pakleni islands just outside Hvar. West of the island of Hvar is Vis, which has two charming ports and the so-called blue caves, which is just outside the port Komiza. If you want to visit the mainland in this area, you can visit the cities of Split and Trogir, both of which are a UNESCO world heritage site including Emperor Diocletian's Palace in Split. Two large marinas are in Split. It is also possible to take the bus from Trogir if you prefer to sleep with the boat there. Trogir is also a very nice and cozy city to wander around and enjoy a delicious dinner or visit bars and cafes. SAILING ROUTES Central Archipelago Trogir Marina Trogir is only 10 nautical miles west of Split on a small island outside the city of Trogir. The only thing that unites the city with the marina is a small bridge with a max. height of 2.4 meters. This means that you can only dock in Trogir from the north and must go around the island if it comes from Split not to end up on the wrong side of the bridge. The old city of Trogir is on the UNESCO World Heritage site and can offer a wide range of cozy restaurants, shops and even a small market where you can find most of it. Milna (Brač) Located on the west coast of the island of Brač is the city Milna which is by its appearance a typical Mediterranean town. Stone houses, meandering streets and a diversity of cultural heritage bears witness to the city's then-cultural greatness. The city offers the most of what you need to have a comfortable living. A unique experience is the classical music concerts held in the Baroque church. Milna was formerly known as a place for fishermen and seamen. You can feel how this today hangs over this special place. The numerous and densely located houses along the meandering streets Milna provides an almost magical atmosphere. Pakleni Otoci Pakleni Otoci is a group of several small islands, located southwest of the island of Hvar. The strong currents around the islands make it difficult for mainly larger ships approaching the islands, but port Palmižana allows sailors to feel safe. It is a spacious lagoon with a wide base of sand beach, surrounded by thick pine tree, fragrant heather, rosemary shrubs and various other exotic plants. The traditional Palmizianska cuisine is known for its products based on fish, lobster, shrimp and seafood served with fresh vegetables from the island's garden. Palmižana was appointed to one of ten 'Dream Points of the Adriatic "in 1999 and its cuisine is renowned as one of the best in the Mediterranean Sea. Hvar After centuries of unforgettable history Hvar is today the largest tourist attraction among the Dalmatians islands. Cultural monument, pleasant climate, fine beaches and excellent restaurants are some of the things that makes Hvar to a real tax worth exploring. With its central location and natural protective environment, the city has had a great importance for Croatia and the Adriatic Sea. Vis, Komiža Komiža units of the city and port situated at the foot of Hum hill (587m), on the west coast of the island of Vis. Komiža is the most sunniest spot in the Adriatic Sea and is therefore open for tourism whole year offering high class of both culture and the environment. Fish and seafood served fresh daily, and seeks nothing other than food and sunshine, there is opportunity for diving and paragliding. North Dalmatia Skradin At the back of the entrance of the Krka River, close to the famous waterfall and surrounded by forest, is small town of Skradin. With a wealth of ancient buildings and cultural monuments, this city can offer visitors an insight into one of Croatia's oldest cities. Skradin is one of the three most visited places in Croatia. A major reason for this is the place of waterfalls, Skradinski abdomen Falls and Roški slap, supplying both new and ancient water mills. Skrandin is also a festival and carnival city. During these periods, the city offers the best of both singing and food. Some of the restaurants specialties include: smoked ham, fresh seafood and fine wines. Kornati - Piškera National Park Kornati is the largest and densest archipelago in the Adriatic Sea. With 152 islands of this archipelago covers an area of 234 km2, of which 69 km2 consisting of kobbar and reefs. Kornati is a real paradise for boat and sailing fanatics and provides a wealth of protection for local fishermen. If you like to swim in the crystal clear waters and to be in a natural, but unnecessary modernity, Kornati provide an experience beyond the ordinary. Kornati has several natural ports that give you these opportunities. Dugi Otok - Telašćica Dugi Otok is the largest island in the archipelago of Zadar, 50 km long and approximately 5 km wide. In the southern part of Dugi Otok are Telašćica bukten which reaches a depth of as much as 8 km. You can reach this bay by traveling through Telašćica National Park, where you also can find salt lake Mir, one of the biggest attraction in the park. With high levels of warm salt water goes Mir over an area of about 2 km. In this area you'll also find 2 typical restaurants for just Telašćica one is located in the inlet of the bay, which is well suited for those who arrive by boat. Zlarin This island lies in the Šibenik archipelago and is separated from the mainland by Šibenik channel. On this channel are daily transport between Zlarin and Šibenik. The unspoiled nature, frequent pine tree and varied beaches attracts many to this place. Zlarin boat harbor provides a good protection for most winds and most of those who live here are localized to a small village of about 350 people. Primošten Primošten is known as the most beautiful part of the country and the sails favorite port. Primošten is a paradise with its thick pine tree and proximity to the Krka National Park. In the old part of town are restaurants, cafes and on the top of the peninsula you'll find the church with a fantastic view. WINDS AND WEATHER Winds on the Adriatic are named depending on the direction from which they blow. Main winds on the Adriatic are bora (NE) and sirocco (SE). The changes of direction and intensity of these winds follow the movements and the depth of depressios over South Europe and the Mediterranean. N - tramontana Tramontana is a type of bora blowing approximately from the north. Nor does it reach the strength of bora, nor does it blow in gusts like bora. In south of Kvarneric it can create high waves. NE - bora (Croatian: bura) Bora is a strong and sudden wind, blowing in gusts from the cold interior of mountainous regions of east Adriatic, mostly from NNE to ENE. The direction and strength of bora depend significantly on the configuration of the landscape. After accelerating over the slope of the mountain it hits the surface of the sea creating irregular and steep waves. Strong bora disperses the wave crests creating "water dust" that reduces visibility. The most common type of bora is anticyclonic, when it`s a cold wind that brings nice and stable weather. Sometimes bora can blow when the atmospheric pressure is low, bringing rainy weather ("dark bora"). In winter bora blows more often, stronger and for longer periods (3-7 days), and it can even bring snow on the islands. Around midday bora usually temporarily weakens. Farther away on the open sea, bora loses some of its gustiness but creates bigger waves. Sudden appearance of bora is its most dangerous characteristic. The gusts of bora can sometimes reach hurricane strength. The places on the east Adriatic where bora is particulary strong are: Bay of Trieste, Bay of Kvarner, Velebit channel (particulary Senj), Sibenik, Cape Ploca, Split, bay Vrulja (between Omis and Makarska), bay Zuljana (on Peljesac). A "cap" of clouds just above the mountain peaks (particularly Velebit) announces bora. The lower edge of these clouds is flat and parts of the clouds separate and disappear blown away by the wind. Interesting: were the mountains on the east Adriatic coast some 1000m higher, bora would blow as a worm wind because the cold wind warms up blowing down the mountain at a rate of 1C every 100 meters. Burin is the night summer breeze that blows mostly from NE in the periods of stable weather. It stops blowing before the morning comes. SE - sirocco (Croatian: jugo) Sirocco is a worm and damp wind, of constant speed and steady direction. It blows from ESE to SSE, depending on the relief of the coast and the islands. Its speed rises gradually and it usually blows with gale force only after 2-3 days of blowing. It blows more often and with greater strength in the south than in the north of Adriatic. It`s stronger on the open sea than closer to the coast. It usually blows when depressions move over the Adriatic and the atmospheric pressure is low, bringing clouds and rainy weather. Visibility is reduced due to the humidity in the air. Sometimes it blows as an anticyclonic wind, mostly in spring, bringing nice and sunny weather. High tide usually accompanies sirocco. Waves from SE without any wind are a sign of forthcoming sirocco. Sirocco creates high waves around Cape Kamenjak in Istria, in the bays of Kvarner and Kvarneric, around Cape Ploca, south of Dubrovnik and on the open sea. S - ostro Ostro is mostly a short-lasting temporary wind. SW - libecchio (Croatian: lebic) Libecchio is a SW wind that occurs mostly after sirocco. It doesn`t blow for a long period of time but it often blows with gale force. The waves created by libecchio interfere with the remaining waves from sirocco creating dangerous pyramidal waves. The name "libecchio" comes from Sicily where this wind blows from Libya. NW - mistral (Croatian: maestral) In the summer, etesian wind flow from NW exists, driven by the pressure difference between the high pressure system above Azores and the Karachi depression. It`s more pronounced in the south Adriatic and has a regular daily cycle. Along with zmorac ("sea wind"), breeze from the sea, it creates the well-known summer mistral, beginning to blow in the middle of the morning, reaching its peak in the early afternoon and disappearing in the evening. Thunderstorms often bring gale force N-NW winds, but in summer they last shortly. The name "mistral" denotes the main and strongest wind in the Mediterranean. For more information about the weather visit www.meteo.hr SAILING WITH CHILDREN Sailing with children Sooner or later all people become adult. Many people then ask themselves, do I have to choose, children or boat? And how does it work if we rent a boat and want to sail with children in Croatia? Maybe the first summer’s regatta is hard to carry. But that’s something you have to count with when you get a child. Sailing with children looks a bit different. But that does not mean that you have to cancel all your sailings. On the contrary, sailing with children can be very enjoyable. And most children like it. It is often when they are young they create a lifelong interest in sailing. What is required? Every time you are out sailing, with or without children, safety is very important. As a skipper you have to be mentally prepared that everything doesn’t always work out as planned. Most important is to retain your calm in all situations. Screaming and yelling is infectious, and the entire crew can be stressed. By questioning you: What happens if I or someone else falls overboard? Can everyone take down the sails? Start the engine? Lower the bathing ladder etc? What happens if we meet other boats, the engine stops or the sail malfunctions, at the worst place conceivable? These things you can easily prevent by using common sense. What about children then? Actually there’s no difference when you are sailing with children. If you have the right attitude to sailing from the beginning, the children will learn about it and like the boat and the sea from a young age. But some tips can be worth thinking about: Life jacket Everyone onboard shall have a life jacket, if you follow this rule there will never going to be a discussion about it. Explain, without frightening the others, how long it takes to turn the boat around and how quickly you become cold. The children often want to take the life jacket off in the boat. Off course it’s OK if the weather conditions are good, and if the children by themselves manage to put on the life jackets if it’s necessary. Seasickness Exactly as with adults, some children are gifted with a sense of balance which isn’t affected by the sea. But if the boat is rocking really much, it could be proper that the child comes up in the cockpit. A good basic condition to avoid seasickness is to prepare the child with right clothes and adequate food. Put some candy, a sandwich and something without carbonic acid to drink in the cockpit so it can easily be reached if the children need it. Normally children will be spared from seasickness. Route As mentioned earlier the Adriatic Sea is one of the calmest oceans in the world. Croatia’s infrastructure with guest harbours, marines and bays is probably the best in the world, which makes it a perfect destination for sailing with children. Don’t plan a route which you can’t change. And it should be fun to sail, for everyone! The least experienced decide the tempo. Both when it comes to stages and choices of routes. In Croatia you never have to expose yourselves for long stages, if you don’t want to. There is plenty to do and see within short distances. For the smallest Often you can suspend the prams liner at the boat. A harness is good to have on deck, sometime it is better than a life jacket. When the children are around three years old, they start to explore the boat by themselves. Let them do it as much as possible, but of course under supervision. Let the child grow and develop – even on board! The older children often want to be by themselves, let them. Sometimes they are involved, and sometimes not. That’s OK! By giving them new and stimulating tasks, the interest for sailing is kept. Most of the time, I am the most experienced aboard, and at the same time I’m the one who steers least. My job is to keep an eye on the safety aboard and the navigation. Lifeline net It is a fine-meshed net along the lifeline which is a good protection when the children are playing on deck. This net you can book in advance for a cost of 80€. Entertainment Two children together have more fun than one. If you only have one child, take a friend along. Otherwise think about not sail too long stages. Let the children play on board, they are full of imagination, so e.g. fenders, ropes and the boom, can be toys for a moment. Take some of your child’s favourite toys and books on the sailing holiday, then your child feels more at home on the boat. And teach the children to take contact with children on other boats, they are in the same situation and often enjoy playing with each other. The older children often like to use the dinghy. Of course this is a good opportunity to learn about boat life, but keep an eye on how they are driving, many children don’t drive sensible. Teach them not to drive around boats that are going in or out from the harbour. And inform them about the fact that the engine disturbs both animals and human beings, especially in bays. Teach your children to show respect and to have full preparedness, things can happen when you are out at the sea. Warm waters When you are out sailing in warm waters it’s really good to bring a diving mask, buy one in silicone with hardened glass. Diving shops often have high quality products, and at a boat show they often have campaigns. There are different opinions when it comes to swimming fins for children. For children over ten years who are used to swimming a lot it can be a good complement, but it demands a lot of practice. When your child is out swimming, remember to remind them about other boats – and keep an eye on them! A swimsuit or t-shirt and shorts prevent them from getting cold. Remember that both you and your children are exposed to the sun all day long when you are sailing. Use sun protection, especially after bathing, and a shirt if you need extra protection. Don’t forget to protect your face, use sunglasses and a cap. Game-boy It could sound crazy, but it’s an excellent enjoyment for the kids when they have to wait for the food, or if they are bored at the restaurant at night. If they don’t like playing Game-Boy, bring paper and pens, and they are busy for a while. The food The key to a pleasant stay aboard is the food. Focus on the food, let everyone help and decide dishes. It is smart to serve the children’s favourite dishes the first days aboard, so they don’t associate your sailing holiday with bad food. Use local ingredients, and let the children buy bread on the landing stage or fish from the fishing boat, so they are contributory in the cooking. Remember to make sure that everyone aboard drinks a lot of water. Have personal water bottles and fruit easily available. Life aboard is pretty simple. Much of your time is about eating, spending time with each other, sleeping and of course sailing. This is the fascination about the boat life, so make sure that you make it as pleasant as possible. But don’t forget to eat on land sometimes. Many of the famous chefs are working in the archipelago during the summers, so you can find delicious cuisine. Let your children try out what they want from the menu, many restaurants serve smaller portions even of their more expensive dishes, and they will have great memories from when they tasted lobster for the first time. This is an excellent moment to make sure your kids inherit your great taste of life – your sailing life.
